Additional Information

Women for Sobriety (WFS) is a non-profit, secular support organization specifically designed to help women overcome substance use disorders. Founded in 1975 by sociologist Dr. Jean Kirkpatrick, the program focuses on total abstinence, self-empowerment, positive reinforcement, and emotional growth to replace destructive habits.

Unlike traditional 12-step programs (like Alcoholics Anonymous), WFS does not ask members to admit powerlessness over their addiction. Instead, the curriculum—known as the New Life Program—is guided by 13 "Acceptance Statements" centered on taking personal responsibility, increasing self-esteem, and embracing a positive mindset.

Core Components of the Program

  • Positive Reinforcement: The philosophy dictates that negative emotions are destructive and that members have the power to control how much an event or problem bothers them.
  • Holistic Healing: The program emphasizes treating the mind and body through meditation, relaxation techniques, and physical exercise.
  • The 13 Acceptance Statements: These positive affirmations (such as "I am a capable woman" and "Problems bother me only to the degree I permit") are recited and reflected upon daily.
  • Women-Only Support: Meetings are exclusively for women, allowing them to address underlying issues like trauma, depression, and low self-esteem in a safe, shared space.
